  • When you first leave your core family, calling home may be a regular occurrence with an everlasting flow of topics you can't wait to talk about. As time progresses, it may become difficult to find both the time and the subject of a conversation but keeping a log may help.

Carry a note pad with you and jot down any thoughts you have through out the day that you'd like to share with your family. Use your cell phone to take regular photos and video and be sure to send them often. The family you send them to is just as strained as you are being so far away from you and your children.

    Phone
Today, many families opt not to have a land-line phone and use cell-phones exclusively. You will need to do your some research and decide the most economical way to keep in touch. Your location will have a lot to do with your decision. Research has shown that more people check and respond to text messages than to email. A properly equiped cell-phone will let you instantly send pictures and videos to share your proud parenting moments.

    Blog
There are many options like blogsplot.com and WordPress.com which will allow you to create a blog for no charge. As your blog grows, it can be used as a digital scrapbook or baby book for your children. Grandparent's, aunts, and uncles can comment on each new entry. If you choose, some additional work may make your blog an additional source of income.

If you choose to make a blog, remember that it is just a placeholder. If you want your family to interact with you, your photos, and your messages, you will need to make it easy for them to find it. Some family members will never go to the computer, others will bug you to update it often with a new post.

    Facebook/MySpace/Twitter
These are examples of social media but they are far from exclusive. When picking ways to stay in touch with your family it is best to find out what they are already doing. If your family members are already on Facebook it will be easier to communicate with them their than to try to move everyone to MySpace.

Aside from being able to post pictures, short messages, and quotes, Facebook lets you interact with family and friends with games like FarmVille, Mafia Wars, and Mystery Manor.Just remember that anything you post onto a social media site can be forwarded to people you don't know and it is permanent. Keep it lite and positive.

    Skype
Skype is an example of VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocal.) By downloading the Skype application found at skype.com to your computer or onto your smart phone, you can communicate with other skype users with video or voice for no cost. Other subscription services can be used for a fee. Skype services continue to grow and they are truly worth checking out.

Living away from home can be a stressful time. Keeping in touch is just one way to assure that you have a plan in place when parenting away from home. Find out more steps in the book Make Your Own Village available on amazon.com
